“Pony Chung” 
      Korean industrialist (b. Aug. 6, 1928, T'ongch'on, Kangwon province, Korea [now N.Kor.]—d. May 21, 2005, Seoul, S.Kor.), served (1967–96) as chairman of the Hyundai Motor Co., which under Chung's leadership grew into one of the world's largest automobile manufacturers. Chung at first steered Hyundai into working with foreign automobile companies, but in 1974 the company introduced its first production model, the Pony. Its success of that car in South Korea prompted Chung in 1986 to market the car in the United States as the Excel. Chung was forced out of the company in 1999 by his oldest brother, Chung Ju Yung, founder of the overall Hyundai Group, who wanted the position for his own son. Chung Se Yung was also chairman (1987–96) and honorary chairman (1996–99) of the Hyundai Group.
