Herbert Brovarnik
British-born American chemist (b. May 22, 1912, London, Eng.—d. Dec. 19, 2004, Lafayette, Ind.), did extensive research into the chemical element boron and advanced the field of organic chemistry with the development of a class of chemicals called organoboranes—compounds of boron, carbon, and hydrogen. Organoboranes proved to be extremely useful in synthesizing carbon compounds, both for laboratory research and for industrial purposes, including the production of pharmaceutical and agricultural chemicals. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1979 together with German chemist Georg Wittig. Brown received both a B.S. (1936) and a Ph.D. (1938) in chemistry from the University of Chicago. He taught there and at Wayne University (now Wayne State) in Detroit, but he spent most of his academic career as a professor (1947–78) at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1957 and was awarded the U.S. National Medal of Science in 1969.
