      Canadian business tycoon who, with his brother, Edward, built the country's largest corporate empire after the two were forced by their Montreal-based cousins to sell their blocks of shares in Seagram Co. Ltd.; they also owned (1971-78) the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team, but in later years Peter focused on community service activities. He died one day before he was to have been presented with the Order of Canada (b. Oct. 2, 1929—d. Nov. 30, 1996).
