Bell, Ken

      Canadian photographer (b. July 30, 1914, Toronto, Ont.—d. June 26, 2000, Gibsons, B.C.), was one of Canada's most accomplished photographers. Bell documented Canada's participation in World War II while serving in the Canadian Army Film and Photo Unit; his war pictures were housed permanently at the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa. After the war, Bell freelanced for numerous Canadian publications, including the news magazine Maclean's. He also served as the official photographer of the National Ballet of Canada. Bell published many books, including The Way We Were (1988) and, with historian Desmond Morton, The Royal Canadian Military Institute—100 Years, 1890–1990 (1990). Bell twice won the Professional Photographers of Canada's Photographer of the Year Award, in 1965 and 1966, and received the Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators Lifetime Achievement Award in 1986.
