      Canadian businessman and lawyer (b. Aug. 11, 1932, Minnedosa, Man.—d. Oct. 7, 2003, Winnipeg, Man.), transformed a bankrupt American television station (purchased in 1974 and subsequently moved to Winnipeg) into CanWest Global Communications Corp., Canada's largest media company; its holdings included more than 130 newspapers and the Global Television Network. Asper was also a noted philanthropist.
