born 1443
died May 21, 1524, Framlingham, Suffolk, Eng.

English noble prominent in the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII.

Son of the 1st duke of Norfolk, he was made steward of the royal household and created earl of Surrey in 1483. While fighting for Richard III, he was taken prisoner (and his father killed) in the Battle of Bosworth Field. After his release in 1489, he commanded the defense of the Scottish borders and later defeated the Scots at the Battle of Flodden. In 1520 he was guardian of England during Henry VIII's absence in France.
