Naṣrānī, Cape

Naṣrānī, Cape
or Raʾs Naṣrānī

Inlet and cape, southeastern coast of the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt.

The site of an Egyptian military base, it was captured by Israeli forces in the Sinai campaign of 1956 (see Suez Crisis). After the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel again occupied the site before withdrawing from the Sinai Peninsula in the early 1980s. In 1972 a new town, Ophira (now Sharm al-Shaykh), was built there. The region has been developed as a recreational and tourist area.
