died March 23, 1925

Russian general.

He was chief of staff during the Russo-Turkish War, commander in chief in Caucasia in 1897, and minister of war (1898–1904). In the Russo-Japanese War he commanded the Russian troops in Manchuria; he resigned after the Russian defeat in the Mukden Incident.
