Within the range lie many lofty peaks, including Grossglockner (12,460 feet [3,798 metres]), the highest point in Austria. The range is crossed by road through the Felber Tauern Tunnel (east of Grossvenediger) and through the Hochtor Tunnel (east of Grossglockner). A railroad line (built 1901–09) uses the Tauern Tunnel (5 mi long) linking the towns of Spittal an der Drau (southeast) and Schwarzach im Pongau (north).
