U.S. film director, screenwriter, and producer.
He served as a pilot in World War I, then wrote screenplays in Hollywood (from 1922) and directed several projects before making his first major film,
A Girl in Every Port (1928). A master technician and storyteller, he created a sense of intimacy by filming from eye level. He directed over 40 films (many of which he also produced and wrote) in a variety of genres:
