, U.S. It was founded in 1924 by Mary Louise Curtis Bok (1876–1970), wife of the editor Edward Bok, and named for her father, the inventor Charles Gordon Curtis. Her endowment was adequate to assure scholarships for gifted students throughout the world. Many eminent musicians have served on its faculty, including Wanda Landowska, Bohuslav Martinů, and Rudolf Serkin. Graduates include Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, and Gian Carlo Menotti.

      private, coeducational conservatory of music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. The institute awards bachelor's and master's degrees. The curriculum covers composition, conducting, accompanying, music theory and history, and studies in voice and in keyboard and orchestral instruments. The institute admits only students of exceptional musical talent, and it provides all of its students with full scholarships. Total enrollment is approximately 160.

      The Curtis Institute of Music was founded in 1924 by Mary Louise Curtis Bok. Such noted composers as Leonard Bernstein (Bernstein, Leonard), Samuel Barber (Barber, Samuel), Gian Carlo Menotti (Menotti, Gian Carlo), and Vincent Persichetti (Persichetti, Vincent) have studied at Curtis. The institute's library contains more than 65,000 books, music scores, and records, and its orchestra library houses the Leopold Stokowski (Stokowski, Leopold) Collection.
