city, southeastern New South Wales, Australia, situated on the Murrumbidgee River. A service centre for the fertile Riverina district (chiefly wheat and sheep), it is also the site of an agricultural college and research institute, a college of advanced education, a soil-conservation research station, and a Royal Australian Air Force base. Secondary industries include a rubber-goods factory, timber and flour mills, dairy-products factories, iron foundries, and engineering works. An eisteddfod (Welsh: “festival of arts”) and agricultural show are annual events. Settled in the 1830s, Wagga Wagga was proclaimed a town in 1849, a borough in 1870, and a city in 1946. Its name is an Aboriginal word meaning “many crows” in reference to the birds that frequent the area. The Sturt Highway runs through Wagga Wagga, and there is rail and air service to Sydney, 235 miles (380 km) northeast. Pop. (2006) local government area, 57,016.* * *
