▪ Francecity, a suburb of Lyon, Rhône département, Rhône-Alpes région, east-central France. Villeurbanne forms the eastern part of the metropolitan agglomeration of Lyon. It is located on the right bank of the Rhône River. The first skyscrapers in France were built there in the 1930s.Villeurbanne grew as an industrial suburb of Lyon, and textiles, plastics, and automobile components are still manufactured. Printing and metalworking are also important. By the late 20th century much of its industrial activity had declined, and the suburb's proximity to Lyon led to the rapid growth of the service sector. The 250-acre (100-hectare) La Doua Science and Technology Park in the north of Villeurbanne houses part of the Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University and numerous other research institutions. Pop. (1999) 124,215; (2005 est.) 134,800.* * *
