▪ mountains, United Statessegment of the Coast Ranges (see Pacific mountain system), southern California, U.S. The range extends southeastward for 55 miles (90 km) from Cajon Pass to San Gorgonio Pass and defines the eastern limit of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The two main peaks, San Bernardino (10,649 feet [3,246 metres]) and San Gorgonio (11,499 feet [3,505 metres]; the highest point in southern California), lie east of the city of San Bernardino. To the southeast are the Little San Bernardino Mountains, constituting the western part of Joshua Tree National Park. Much of the range is within the northern portion of San Bernardino National Forest, where the main activities are tourism and outdoor recreation. The mountains also serve as an important watershed for the surrounding area.* * *
