river formed by the confluence of the North Fork of the Republican River and the Arikaree River near Haigler, Neb., U.S. It flows eastward through Swanson Lake (behind Trenton Dam) past the towns of McCook, Red Cloud, and Superior and then turns southeastward through Kansas to unite with the Smoky Hill River at Junction City, in Geary county, to form the Kansas River after a course of 445 miles (716 km). The river is part of the Missouri River Basin flood-control and land-reclamation project. Its dams include the Harlan County Dam (1948) near Alma, Neb., and the Milford Dam (1965) near Junction City; those on Republican tributaries include the Bonny Dam (1951), Enders (1951), Medicine Creek (Harry D.
