It is found in woodlands and hunted for sport and food. Red deer live in sexually segregated herds except in the breeding season, when males (harts) fight for harems of females (hinds). There are several endangered subspecies. See also wapiti.

city, central Alberta, Canada, on the Red Deer River, midway between Calgary (90 miles [145 km] south) and Edmonton. Original settlement began around a ford where the trail from Calgary to Edmonton crossed the river (Red Deer Crossing), a little west of the present site. A militia post, Fort Normandeau, was built there during the North West Rebellion (1885); a reconstruction of the fort now serves as a museum. In 1891 the railway reached the river, and a community developed around the railway station. It grew as the processing and distribution centre for a productive mixed-farming region. It also has several important regional service facilities, including the Michener Centre (1922)—an institution for the care of people with developmental disabilities—and Red Deer College (1964). Inc. city, 1913. Pop. (2006) 82,772.
