a white, crystalline, nonnarcotic, alkaloidal powder, C20H21NO4, obtained from opium, but not a morphine derivative and not habit-forming or addicting, used in the treatment of spasms of involuntary muscle, esp. of the stomach, bronchi, and arteries.
