a low South American foliage plant, Pilea involucrata, of the nettle family, having toothed, velvety, brownish-green leaves and small, green flowers in clusters.
[appar. PAN- or PAN(-AMERICAN) + Sp amiga (female) friend ( < L amica), the plant having at one time been publicized as "the Pan-American friendship plant"]
