It lies on the south bank of the St. Lawrence River, at the mouth of the Matane River.A transportation, commercial, and industrial centre, Matane is a pulp-shipping port and eastern terminus of the Canada and Gulf Terminal Railway. Lumbering, woodworking, furniture making, flour milling, and tanning are its main industries, while dairying, market gardening, ranching, and shrimp and salmon fishing are important in the surrounding rural area. The city is a supply point for sport fishing in the Matane River Reserve. Matane is 32 miles (51 km) from Métis Gardens (Jardins de Métis), a former private estate with formal gardens that include 4,000 plant species from varied climates. Pop. (2006) 14,742.* * *
