Malang is located on a plateau between Mount Kawi (8,697 feet [2,651 metres]) and the Tengger Mountains, and the city enjoys a comfortable climate. The Indonesian parliament met there temporarily during Indonesia's struggle for independence from Dutch rule. Malang's industries include the manufacture of soap, ceramics, and cigarettes. There are good road and rail connections to the provincial capital, Surabaya. Among the tourist attractions in the surrounding area are the palace ruins of the ancient kings of Dinaya, Tumapel, and Singhasari. Malang is now the headquarters of an Indonesian army division, and an Indonesian air force base is just east of the city.
