a tall, black, brimless, flat-topped hat, worn by the clergy of the Eastern Church.

      closed bonnetlike headdress, apparently of Byzantine origin, rising from a circlet and usually equipped with hanging ornaments, or pendilia, on each side. Its form is retained in the mitres (mitre) of prelates of the Greek Orthodox church.

      Sometimes the kamelaukion was made of precious metal, sometimes of fabric; in either event, it might be richly decorated with jewels. The crown of Abyssinia (Ethiopia), brought to England after the fall of Magdala in 1868 but since returned to Addis Ababa, appears to be a development of this headdress.
