▪ mountains, EuropeSlovene Julijske Alpe , Italian Alpi Giulierange of the Eastern Alps, extending southeastward from the Carnic Alps and the town of Tarvisio in northeastern Italy to near the city of Ljubljana in Slovenia. Composed mainly of limestone, the mountains are bounded by the Fella River and Sella di (Pass of) Camporosso (northwest) and by the Sava River (north and east). They rise to Triglav (9,396 ft [2,864 m]), the highest point in Slovenia. Forming part of the divide between the watersheds of the Adriatic and Black seas, the mountains are separated into two sections by Predel Pass (Italian: Passo del Predil; 3,793 ft [1,156 m]), over which a road crosses the range. Within the mountains lie many valleys and numerous summer resorts. Winter sports and climbing are popular.* * *
