Once the capital of the Dogra Rajput dynasty, it became part of Ranjit Singh's domain in the 19th century. It is now a railroad and manufacturing centre. The city is home to the University of Jammu (1969) and the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Jammu (1999).
