Dis·mal Swamp or Great Dis·mal Swamp (dĭzʹməl)
A swampy region of southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina. The heavily forested area has been greatly reduced by drainage. George Washington surveyed the Dismal Swamp in 1763.
