burgh (town), South Lanarkshire council area, historic county of Lanarkshire, Scotland. It was Scotland's first post-World War II planned new town, built around the old pastoral village of East Kilbride to accommodate residential and commercial growth from nearby Glasgow. The name suggests early Celtic association with St. Bride (Brigit (Brigit of Ireland, Saint)). Industries include food processing, light engineering, and the manufacture of a variety of consumer goods. The National Engineering Laboratory is located there. Pop. (2004 est.) 73,820.
