Berriasian Stage

Berriasian Stage

first of six main divisions (in ascending order) of the Lower Cretaceous Series, representing rocks deposited worldwide during the Berriasian Age, which occurred between 145.5 million and 140.2 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. Rocks of the Berriasian overlie those of the Jurassic System's Tithonian Stage and underlie rocks of the Valanginian Stage.

The name for this stage is derived from Barrias, in southeastern France, for which the surrounding area serves as the classic type district for rocks of this age. In Great Britain and elsewhere in northern Europe, the Berriasian is represented by the lower portions of the Wealden Series. The Berriasian Stage is characterized by a distinct ammonite (ammonoid) genus used as an index fossil.
