▪ Norwaymunicipality and port, western Norway, north of the mouth of Stor Fjord. The municipality is set on several islands—including Nørvøya, Aspøya, Heissa (Hessa), and Oksnøya—which are connected by bridges. The settlement dates from the 9th century when Rollo (Rolf) the Ganger established a chieftain seat nearby, but township status was not acquired until 1848. After the town burned in 1904, it was rebuilt with stone in a distinctive Art Nouveau style. Ålesund is a regional commercial centre and a point for touring the hills of the Sunnmøre region, the Norang valley, the Øye glaciers, the island of Runde, and the Viking village of Giske. The site of one of Norway's largest fishing harbours, it is a base for cod and halibut fishing trawlers, and, together with Tromsø, it is the headquarters of the Arctic sealing fleet. Ålesund University College was established there in 1994 through the amalgamation of three smaller institutions. Pop. (2007 est.) mun., 41,385.* * *
