US Open
1. a major US golf competition held each year at different places. It was first held in 1895. The most wins by a single player have been four. Four players have achieved this: Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus. Compare Masters Tournament, British Open.
2. a US tennis competition each year which is one of the sport’s grand slam(1) events. It was first played in 1968 in Forest Hills, New York, and moved in 1978 to Flushing Meadow, New York. Jimmy Connors has won the men’s competition the most times (5), and Chris Evert has won the most women’s events (6). Compare Wimbledon.
