(in England, Wales and Northern Ireland) a school examination in any one of several subjects. Most students take GCSEs at the end of their fifth year of secondary school, around the age of 16. They are taken by students of all abilities, but those who want to continue studying for A levels need to pass a certain number of GCSEs at a particular level.
