Fulbright scholarship

Fulbright scholarship
n
any of a number of US scholarships (= awards of money for study) given for exchanges between US and foreign universities and colleges. Those who receive them are called Fulbright scholars and include students and teachers. The programme was established by the Fulbright Act (1946) of Senator J William Fulbright (1905–95), and it first used money from the sale of old US military equipment. More than 250 000 scholarships had been awarded by 2004.

Educational grant under an international exchange program created to increase understanding between the U.S. and other countries.

The program was conceived by U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright and instituted by the Fulbright Act of 1946. A complementary program for seminars abroad was established through the Fulbright-Hays Act of 1961. Most Fulbright Program participants are graduate students, but teachers, advanced researchers, trainees, and observers may also qualify. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of State.

educational grant under an international exchange scholarship program created to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through the medium of educational and cultural exchange. The program was conceived by Sen. J. William Fulbright (Fulbright, J. William) of Arkansas and carried forward by the Fulbright Act of 1946 and subsequent legislation, consolidated and expanded in the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961, the Fulbright–Hays Act.

The Fulbright program is based on a series of bilateral diplomatic agreements that place ultimate responsibility for operations with the U.S. Department of State. Overseas administration, however, is turned over to educational foundations in which signatory governments and their academic communities participate; some other governments share the program's costs with the United States.

A candidate for a Fulbright grant must be under 35 years of age, have a bachelor of arts degree or its equivalent, be proficient in the language of the country in which he proposes to study, and have general maturity and scholastic competence. Most of the exchanges have been students, but teachers, advanced researchers, trainees, and observers have also qualified.
