egg-rolling

egg-rolling
n [U]
a traditional Easter custom in northern England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. Each person taking part rolls a hard-boiled egg down a slope, and if it is not damaged at the bottom they will be lucky in various ways. Egg-rolling was introduced into the US in 1877 by Dolly Madison, the wife of President James Madison. It was originally done at Easter on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, and later in the grounds of the White House(1), where it still happens every year, except in time of war. It also takes place in many local communities.
