the nearest Sunday to 11 November ( Armistice Day), on which ceremonies are held in Britain to remember the people killed during the two world wars and other conflicts. The largest ceremony is held in London, when politicians, Commonwealth figures and members of the royal family lay flowers at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. People traditionally wear a paper or plastic poppy (= a red flower) on Remembrance Sunday and the days leading up to it, and the day is also called Poppy Day.
