Whar·ton (hwôrʹtn, wôrʹ-), Edith Newbold Jones. 1862-1937.
American writer whose works include subtle satires on New York society, such as The House of Mirth (1905), and the short, tragic novel Ethan Frome (1911). She won a Pulitzer Prize in 1921 for The Age of Innocence.
