range in southern Costa Rica, extending to the border with western Panama. Its highest peak, Chirripó Grande, rises to 12,530 feet (3,819 metres). Poor transportation facilities limit access to the Talamanca region, where several national parks and Indian reservations are located, including Chirripó National Park. The Cordillera de Talamanca and La Amistad (Friendship) National Park, adjoining Panama, have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, the first binational biosphere reserve. The two parks comprise about 900 square miles (2,400 square km) of land.
