▪ Swedencity, in the län (county) of Stockholm, east-central Sweden, just northwest of the city of Stockholm. An ancient settlement, it has runic stones and several burial sites dating from the time of the Vikings. Notable buildings include a 12th-century church; the Karlberg Palace, a military academy since the 18th century; Ulriksdal Palace, which sometimes serves as a royal residence; and a sports stadium seating about 52,000 persons. In the early 1960s Solna Centrum (centre) was built as a combined administrative, cultural, and shopping district. Formerly part of Solna Commune, Solna became a city in 1948 and is governed by a city council. It is a rail junction and a manufacturing centre. It is also a medical centre, with several large hospitals and a variety of medical teaching and research institutes. Pop. (2005 est.) mun., 60,575.
