kotamadya (municipality), Central Java (Jawa Tengah) (Jawa Tengah) propinsi (province), Java, Indonesia. The city lies 35 miles (56 km) north-northeast of Yogyakarta, at the foot of Mount Merbabu. At an elevation of 1,916 feet (584 metres), it is a well laid out city that stands in the midst of fruit- and vegetable-growing highlands. The nearby hills are covered with plantations of rubber and coffee, and rice fields stretch before the peaks of a chain of volcanic mountains, now dormant. Most of the population is Javanese, with a mixture of Chinese and Indians, the latter mostly traders and merchants. The city is a centre of trade and transshipment for rice, corn (maize), rubber, cassava, coffee, cacao, and cinchona. Industries include rice milling, sawmilling, coffee and rubber processing, manufacture of machine tools and agricultural equipment, and textile production. Crafts include wood carving, plaiting, batik printing, bamboo working, and basket weaving. The Satya Wacana Christian University, originally founded as a private Christian teacher-training college in 1956, is located there. Kopeng, a hill resort (4,593 feet [1,400 metres]), is about 9 miles (14 km) to the south of Salatiga. Pop. (2005) 165,394.
