- Malheur River
-
▪ river, Oregon, United Statesriver rising in the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness on the southern slopes of the Blue Mountains in the Malheur National Forest, Oregon, U.S. It flows southeast, north, and northeast to join the Snake River at Ontario on the Idaho state line, after a course of 165 miles (266 km). Warm Springs Reservoir, impounded by Warm Springs Dam (1919), is on the Middle Fork of the Malheur, north of Riverside. The river's name is the French word for “misfortune,” and the river is probably so called because a cache that the explorer Peter Skene Ogden (Ogden, Peter Skene) made near the stream in 1826 was stolen. The North Fork and Middle Fork of the Malheur River, flowing through steep canyons, are protected under the U.S. Wild and Scenic Rivers system.
