▪ Flemish composerGerman Peter Van Straten, also called Pierchon, Perchon, or Pierson De La Rueborn c. 1460, Tournai, Flanders [now in Belgium]died Nov. 20, 1518, Courtrai [now Kortrijk, Belg.]composer in the Flemish, or Netherlandish, style that dominated Renaissance music, known for his religious music.La Rue worked in Brussels from 1492, where he served Philip the Handsome and from 1508, Margaret of Austria, regent of the Netherlands; with them he visited France and Spain. In 1516 he became canon at Courtrai. La Rue left more than 30 masses and about 45 motets, distinguished by their densely compressed style and skillful structure. His 32 surviving secular pieces include vocal part-songs and instrumentally accompanied solos.
