highest point (5,268 feet [1,606 metres]) in Maine, U.S. It lies in Baxter State Park, 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Millinocket, in Piscataquis county, in the east-central part of the state. This rugged mountain consists of a group of summits of which the highest is Baxter Peak. Mount Katahdin is the northern terminus of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, which extends southwestward to Georgia. The mountain's name is derived from an Abenaki Indian word meaning “main mountain.”
