also spelled Djembercity, Jawa Timur provinsi (province), Java, Indonesia, located at the foot of Mount Argopuro, 95 miles (153 km) southeast of Surabaya, the provincial capital. Roads and railway link it with Banyuwangi to the east, Probolinggo to the northwest, and Bondowoso and Situbondo to the northeast. Jember is an intermediary centre of trade for agricultural commodities produced in the surrounding area, including sugar, tobacco, corn (maize), and peanuts (groundnuts). Industries include lumber mills and machine shops; processed food, beverages, and textiles are also produced. Crafts are wood carving, metalworking, plaiting, and mat and basket weaving. Most of the population is Javanese with an admixture of Tenggarese. Islam is the major religion. Jember University was founded in 1957. Pop. (2000) 271,494.
