▪ Chinacity, central Qinghai (Tsinghai) sheng (province), western China. Golmud is an important highway centre, standing at the intersection of two ancient routes that more recently have become highways. One links Xining in Qinghai and Lanzhou in Gansu province in the east with the western Qaidam Basin area; the other runs north-south from western Gansu via a pass in the Tanggula Mountains to Naqu and Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region. In addition, Golmud is connected to the national rail network via Lanzhou, and in 2006 a new line opened southward to Lhasa, Tibet. There is also an airport with flights to cities in the region.Golmud's industrial development was insignificant until the rich mineral resources of the Qaidam region (which include coal, oil, and vast deposits of salt and other minerals) began to be exploited, and the city subsequently developed a chemical industry. The fertilizer produced there has helped to bring parts of the barren region into cultivation. Pop. (2000) 114,330.
