▪ SpainSpanish Guechocity, suburb of Bilbao, Vizcaya provincia (province), in the comunidad autónoma (autonomous community) of Basque Country, northern Spain. It is located near where the Nervión River empties into the Bay of Biscay and includes four barrios (city districts): Algorta, Las Arenas, Neguri, and Santa María de Getxo (from which the municipality derives its name). Its founding is linked to the noble families of Martiartu and Guecho. The city's 6 miles (10 km) of coastline and beaches afford ample fishing and swimming, and there are public and private sports clubs. A small textile industry exists, though services are the city's main economic activity. Las Arenas is connected to Portugalete across the Nervión by the Vizcaya Bridge, a lofty suspension bridge, built (1893) by Alberto Palacio; in 2006 the bridge was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Pop. (2007 est.) mun., 81,746.
