- Etterbeek
-
▪ Belgiummunicipality, Brussels-Capital Region, central Belgium. First mentioned in the early 12th century, Etterbeek is one of the 19 suburban communes that, with Brussels proper, make up Greater Brussels. Historically, Etterbeek was primarily industrial, with chemical, clothing, metalwork, machinery, and furniture manufacturing. The industrial character of the municipality faded, however, as it became home to many European Union (EU) offices and their employees. Its location between downtown Brussels and the Soignes Forest (Flemish: Zoniënwoud) has made it an attractive place for business professionals to live. There is also a large army barracks in the southeast section bordering the Free University of Brussels. The municipality is the site of the Cinquantenaire Park (Jubelpark), designed to celebrate Belgium's 50th year of independence in 1880—though the park's dramatic centrepiece, the Triumphal Arch, was not completed until 1905. The park also houses several important museums. Pop. (2007 est.) mun., 42,342.
