duan

      a poem or song in Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic literature. The word was used by James Macpherson (Macpherson, James) for major divisions of his Ossianic (Ossianic ballads) verse and hence was taken to be the Scottish Gaelic equivalent of canto. (canto)
