▪ Greek patriarchalso spelled Demetrios, original name Dimitrios Papadopoulosborn 1914, Constantinople, Ottoman Empire [now Istanbul, Tur.]died Oct. 2, 1991, Istanbul269th ecumenical patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox church.After studying at the French lycée in the Galata district of Istanbul, Dimitrios Papadopoulos entered the Holy Trinity School of Theology on the island of Heybeli in the Sea of Marmara. He was ordained a priest in 1942, served for a few years as a parish administrator in northern Greece, and was later appointed chaplain to the small Greek community in Tehrān. He was consecrated bishop in 1964 and on Feb. 15, 1972, was appointed metropolitan of Gökçeada and Bozcaada, two Turkish islands in the Aegean Sea that were formerly Greek. On July 16, 1972, in Istanbul, the Holy Synod of the Eastern Orthodox church elected Metropolitan Dimitrios patriarch of Constantinople (i.e., ecumenical patriarch), succeeding Athenagoras.
