▪ American chemistborn 1947, Chicago, Ill., U.S.American chemist who was a corecipient, with Osamu Shimomura (Shimomura, Osamu) and Roger Y. Tsien (Tsien, Roger Y.), of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. They were honoured for their work in the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein (GFP), used as a tool to make visible the actions of certain cells. Chalfie was given one-third of the prize for being the first to illuminate cells by inserting GFP into them.Chalfie received a Ph.D. in neurobiology from Harvard University in 1977. In 1982 he became a professor of biological sciences at Columbia University in New York, where he did the research that led to his Nobel honour. He became a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2004.
