parish, Arun district, administrative county of West Sussex, historic county of Sussex, England, on the English Channel south-southwest of London. The name Regis, meaning “King's,” commemorates George V's (George V) convalescence there in 1929. The resort, which has sandy beaches, dates from the late 18th-century Regency period when Hotham House and Dome House (now a teacher-training college) were built, although a small fishing community had existed on the site since medieval times. Pop. (2001) 62,141.
