      American prime-time television action-suspense series airing on the Fox Network and syndicated globally. Since its first episode aired on Nov. 6, 2001, the show has been one of Fox's most successful programs, garnering dozens of Emmy Award nominations and winning the award for outstanding drama series in 2006.

      Co-created by producers Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, 24 stars Kiefer Sutherland (Sutherland, Kiefer) as Jack Bauer, a highly skilled agent who works for the Counter Terrorist Unit, a fictitious U.S. law enforcement agency charged with combating terrorism. The show's name refers to its central conceit and plot device: each season of 24 takes place over the course of 24 hours, with each of its two dozen 60-minute episodes playing out in real time, dramatized by an on-screen graphic of a digital clock that does not stop its countdown even for commercial breaks.

      The premise of each season typically centres on a grave terrorist threat to the United States, such as a nuclear attack. Working with limited information and compounding obstacles, Bauer and his fellow agents have just 24 hours to thwart the plot. The show is a fast-paced, action-driven thriller, featuring a large cast of characters and myriad plot twists than can hinge upon elaborate betrayals and conspiracies as well as circumstantial or superficial obstacles, such malfunctioning technology or a missed phone call. Another element of surprise comes from the producers' willingness to kill off major characters during the course of the show.
