      British mathematician (b. Feb. 13, 1906, Farnley, near Leeds, Eng.—d. Feb. 2, 2005, Reading, Berkshire, Eng.), was coauthor, with Godfrey H. Hardy, of the widely used textbook An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers (1938) and principal and vice-chancellor (1962–76) of the University of Aberdeen, Scot. After studying mathematics on his own while teaching school, Wright obtained a scholarship in 1926 to Jesus College, Oxford, where he studied under Hardy. Wright taught at Christ Church, Oxford, spent a year at the University of Göttingen, Ger., and taught at King's College, London, before taking up a professorship in 1935 at Aberdeen. He became vice-principal in 1961, was later appointed principal and vice-chancellor, and retired from the university in 1983. Wright's research focused on analytic number theory and graph theory.
