      American editor (b. Oct. 4, 1936, Shanghai, China—d. April 12, 2006, Palo Alto, Calif.), presided (1986–96) as editor of the St. Louis (Mo.) Post-Dispatch and became the first person outside the Pulitzer family to lead that newspaper; he also became the first Asian American to take the helm of a major American newspaper. Woo had worked for the paper in various capacities since 1962 before becoming editor, but he was forced to resign when circulation began to decline. Thereafter, he spent the rest of his professional career at Stanford University, where he taught journalism and since 2005 had served as interim director of its graduate journalism program. Woo was a three-time finalist for a Pulitzer Prize.
